Book Reading - Kaleidoscope

WHEN: November 2nd TIME: 10:30 a.m. WHERE: The History Center (800 2nd Ave SE) Free Admission The book is entitled Kaleidoscope, and consists of over 80 short remembrances from everyday life. The stories are the type of stories that were shared at family reunions in earlier decades. The reading will include portions of Robert Chadima’s “Melting Assets” about the ice industry, Anita Burke’s “River Bottom Farm” in which she shares childhood memories about her family farm which the U.S. Corps of Engineers took by eminent domain to create the Coralville Reservoir, Carol Wohlleben’s “The Class Act,” about the formation of the Culinary Arts Program at Kirkwood, and Racheal Davis’ “The Midnight Rid

Spooky Legends of Linn County

Creep The Alley Walking Tours

DATES: October 8th & 15th TIME: 6:00 p.m. Meeting Location: Town Centre Plaza 3rd Ave & 3rd St. SE Downtown alleys reveal a great deal of history about Cedar Rapids buildings and they can be a little spooky too! Come explore the dark side of downtown architecture with this unique historic alley tour. Included areas stories of how alleys function as service and utility access, how they provided secret entrances for Prohibition era businesses as well as clever retail store designs. There will be a few surprises along the tour as well! Please wear alley appropriate footwear! Tickets may be purchased at time of the event. Walking Tour - Automobile Row/Mansion Hill

WHEN: Tuesday, September 24th TIME: 6:00 p.m. WHERE: Please meet at The History Center (800 2nd Ave SE) Learn about the area originally known as “Mansion Hill” along Third, Second and First Avenues East. Get a closer look at the few surviving 19th century residences located on the "Hill". Discover how this section of Cedar Rapids was transformed into “Automobile Row” following the routing of the Lincoln Highway as early as 1913. See many of the restored “Auto Row” structures and get updates on how the area is changing with the expanding MedQuarter District. Tickets may be purchased at time of the event. Linwood Cemetery - Walking Tour

Join us for a walking tour of Linwood Cemetery! WHEN: Tuesday, September 10th TIME: 6:00 p.m. WHERE: Please meet at Murdoch Linwood Funeral Home (520 Wilson Ave SW) Experience the history of the oldest cemetery on the west side of Cedar Rapids. Highlights include visiting the final resting site of some of the infamous Cherry Sisters and a look at the memorial to the victims of the May 1919 Douglas Starch Works Explosion in Cedar Rapids.
