The History Center Presents: Oral Histories Live with photographer George Henry

WHEN: May 1, 2018

TIME: 6:00 p.m.

LOCATION: Whipple Auditorium Downtown Cedar Rapids Public Library

Free Event!

It’s possible that no one has taken more photographs in and around Cedar Rapids than George Henry. On Tuesday, May 1 at 6 pm, The History Center will host a conversation with Henry in Whipple Auditorium at the Cedar Rapids Public Library. Area arts professional Rob Cline will engage Henry in a look back over the photographer’s career. History Center historian Mark Stoffer Hunter will also participate in the event which is free to attend.

George Henry began taking photographs at Coe College when he was a student at the school in the 1940s. For the next five decades, Henry was Coe’s photographer and an impressive archive of his work is housed on the Coe campus in the Stewart Memorial Library.

The event, which is part of a History Center’s new “Oral Histories LIVE!” initiative, supports the Snapshots by William Baylis exhibit currently on display at the library. The exhibit is a collaboration between The History Center and the Cedar Rapids Public Library.

William Baylis was born on September 12, 1873 in Wheatland, Iowa. At the age of 15, Baylis relocated with his family to Cedar Rapids where he developed an interest in photography. With a successful career spanning decades, Baylis is credited with shooting close to 25,000 photographs of early Linn County. The exhibit includes both prints and postcards featuring Baylis’ work.

The exhibit, which is free to visit, will be on display until August 2018. CLICK HERE for information on the Baylis Exhibit.
