This presentation explores the history of Southwest Cedar Rapids through the landmarks that have shaped the community. From the quiet grounds of Linwood and Czech National Cemeteries to the bustling industries of Kings Material and Douglas Starch Works, each site reveals a piece of the city’s past. We’ll look back at the role of 6th Street SW as a vital corridor, the long-standing tradition of racing and events at Hawkeye Downs, and the surprising transformation of Mount Trashmore into a recreational landmark. Together, these stories paint a vivid picture of the people, businesses, and places that made Southwest Cedar Rapids what it is today.

This engaging historical presentation traces the journey of Bohemian immigrants who settled along the Cedar River in the late 1800s, building homes, churches, and businesses that would shape the city’s cultural identity for generations.
